SESSION STRUCTURE

A five minute video guides you through how to structure a handwriting session.

The focus is on regular (preferably daily) of 15 minute sessions.

Children often find these sessions relaxing and very mindful as they devote full concentration to the task.

Most sessions include the production of both letter joins and whole words. This means that progress has a duality - a spotlight on specific joins alongside a broader light on the whole handwriting process.

Typically, in a session, children watch the video demonstration of the target letter join and then complete 5-8 careful formations. They evaluate and repeat if necessary. They then move on to watching the video of the 'challenge words', pausing the video to write out each word two or three times. At the end of a SET they complete a set of consolidation and challenge activities - most of these are directly written into an exercise book with options for printing extra activities to fill-in. Some sessions may be soley devoted to activities. At the end of a set, children evaluate and decide if they should repeat certain parts of the SET or move on to the next.

There is no requirement to have the facility to print, but there are materials which if printed will enhance the child's experience of the course.

The programme is based on significant research and follows the Department for Education (UK) guidance on handwriting. Handwriting is a functional skill and for children who have handwriting difficulties it can represent a significant barrier to progress. The course is an excellent support for children experiencing difficulties with handwriting. It is aimed at children aged 9-13, although older children may find it useful, particularly if their handwriting is hampering examination performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the course start and finish?
The course starts as soon as you join. Access is typically for 12 months for home use. Schools often purchase a two or three year subscription, and renew for continuous access.
What if I am unhappy with the course?
We would never want you to be unhappy! If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, contact us in the first 30 days and we will give you a full refund.
Does the course help my child to develop fine motor skills?
Participants will develop fine motor skills through daily practice of handwriting. However, there are no specific fine motor skills activities or guidance included in this course. There are many websites that provide ideas for development and you can seek support from specialists in physical development and from your child's class teacher. As handwriting is both mental and physical, it can be very useful to add in both fine and gross motor skills to daily or weekly sessions. Some pupils will find it difficult to make progress if fine or gross motor skills are the key issue. The course does not try and address this.
Do I need a printer?
The whole course can be completed online with only an exercise book and a pen/pencil. However, printing some documents such as the tracker and some of the worksheets will enhance the user experience of the course.
Do I need any special equipment?
Critical: a notebook / exercise book and pen or pencil. Optional: You may find purchasing a handwriting pen (e.g. Beryl) may be useful for ease of writing. Choices: Different height lined paper can be useful at the start of the programme. Wider lines tend to make handwriting production easier. You may start with a wider line, and move to the standard exercise book line height of 8mm. I would avoid using narrow lines with a height below this for the course.
